Living on Purpose: Lessons from Yoga for Business and Life

Summary of Talk by Arianne Traverso, Holistic Business Coach and Yoga Teacher, at the Indo-American World Yoga Conference, 2024

At the Indo-American World Yoga Conference, 2024, holistic business coach and yoga teacher Arianne Traverso delivered a powerful reflection on how the timeless wisdom of yoga can be seamlessly integrated into the modern pursuit of building a purposeful business and life. Her central message was both practical and deeply spiritual: when individuals live on purpose, for purpose, and in purpose, they step into authenticity and unlock true abundance.

The Power of Purpose

Traverso emphasized that purpose is far more than a lofty concept — it is the anchor that sustains people when distractions or difficulties arise. She explained that purpose is what “gets someone out of bed at four in the morning or keeps them steady when challenges appear.”

To bring clarity, she encouraged entrepreneurs, teachers, and guides to articulate their mission in practical terms:

  • Who they serve
  • What transformation they bring
  • Why it matters

For Traverso herself, the mission is guiding wellness professionals to grow their businesses, income, and impact. By doing so, she not only helps them thrive personally but also supports the collective goal of making the world healthier and more connected.

Yoga and Business: A Shared System

Drawing a striking parallel, Traverso compared the discipline of yoga with the discipline required in business. In yoga, progress comes from consistency — returning to the mat daily, practicing breathwork, and maintaining devotion. In business, growth similarly emerges from consistent effort — sending emails, following up with clients, and creating content, even when it feels uncomfortable.

She observed that resistance is natural: many prefer creative tasks such as developing programs or recording videos over administrative duties or sales. Yet, just as meditation or a challenging yoga posture becomes easier with practice, the uncomfortable aspects of business eventually feel natural through persistence.

The Three-Part Framework: Be, Create, Inspire

Traverso also shared her guiding motto — and the name of her podcast — Be, Create, Inspire:

  • Be – Cultivate the inner qualities necessary to thrive. For Traverso, this meant becoming more organized and supported so she could balance motherhood with running multiple businesses.
  • Create – From that inner clarity, bring forth projects, businesses, or practices that truly serve others.
  • Inspire – Use one’s mission-driven work to uplift others, whether within a family, among students, or across a global community.

Clarity is Everything

Clarity, she explained, is as essential in business as it is in meditation. Just as meditation clears the mind to reveal the “diamond hidden beneath the mud,” business success depends on a clear vision.

For some, success may mean expanding a yoga franchise; for others, earning an additional $3,000 a month or reaching more students. What matters most is not comparison, but being crystal clear about one’s own definition of success and then building the steps backward to achieve it.

Living All Life as Yoga

Echoing the timeless words of Sri Aurobindo — “All life is yoga” — Traverso reminded participants that business, family, spiritual practice, and community service are not separate paths but interconnected journeys. When each is approached with purpose and love, challenges transform into opportunities, and alignment naturally leads to success.

Her closing reminder was both simple and profound: prepare yourself — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually — for the path you choose. Whether in business, yoga, or life, this preparation allows one to walk their mission with confidence, clarity, and grace.
